“We hope that our community will rally behind Weeksville and vote for us as their favorite historic place in the city,” said Executive Director Pamela Green. “Winning this contest would enable our organization to restore our existing c. 1930 shed structure for an environmental and food-growing museum exhibit and program space and recreate a root cellar–a historic feature since removed–in the existing c. 1870 house.”
For those of you who don’t know, Weeksville Heritage Center mission is to document, preserve and interpret the history of free African American communities in Weeksville, Brooklyn and beyond and to create and inspire innovative, contemporary uses of African American history through education, the arts, and civic engagement.
Partners in Preservation was created to help educate New Yorkers about the importance of historic sites throughout the city. By winning the PIP contest, running April 26-May 21, 2012, Weeksville has the opportunity to receive a grant for a historic restoration.
