Bed-Stuy Alive!

October 8th – 16th, 2011

The 7th Annual Bed-Stuy Alive!, which runs from  October 8th – October 16th, 2011, celebrates Bedford Stuyvesant’s vibrant business, cultural and artistic communities while promoting pride among its residents. The annual event introduces thousands of visitors to Bed-Stuy’s shops, businesses, distinguished art scene and the historical significance of one of the largest African American communities in the country.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 8

10:00 AM – Street fair Kick-off

3rd Annual Tohma Y. Faulkner Community Awards honoring local heroes, and
featuring excerpts from the MAAFA Suite-A Healing Journey, a moving story of the African Diaspora told through music, dance, and spoken word; courtesy of St. Paul Community Church

12:00PM –  5th Annual Restoration Rocks Music Festival

FREE day-long music concert. Rock to free live sets by some of Brooklyn’s hippest bands, including a set with Mos Def and the Brooklyn Philharmonic!. Sponsored by Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation and the Lyricist Lounge.  A profound and authentic lover of language, renowned Bed-Stuy artist Mos Def is one of the most influential hip-hop stars of all time. He joins Artistic Director Alan Pierson and the Brooklyn Philharmonic in bringing together the aggressive energy and charged lyrics of American hip-hop, and the revolutionary music of Beethoven, remixed anew by emerging artists living and working in East Brooklyn today (more info about the Brooklyn Philharmonic Beethoven Remix Project is here).

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9

8:00 AM Registration, 10:00 AM Race – Restoration 10K Run & Fun Walk – 

Come out and run or walk scenic Bed-Stuy. Post the run, the streets will be open for bikers. Click here for more information and registration.  Considered  to be the warm-up to the NYC Marathon!

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 15

12:00 PM – 7:00 PM –  8th Annual Studio Strut (Free)

Local artists will display their works at local galleries. Begin and pick up map at Zion Gallery, 152 MacDonough Street. Sponsored by the Bedford- Stuyvesant Artists’ Association  www.besaa.org

9:00 AM – 5:00 PM – 33rd Annual House Tour of Bedford-Stuyvesant

Educational tour of  Bed-Stuy’s beautiful brownstones, sponsored by Brownstoners of Bedford-Stuyvesant.  Purchase tickets at “Old Boys High School” (Marcy and Putnam Avenues) or online at  www.brownstonersofbedstuy.org. Also, FREE  homebuyers’ seminar begins at 9:00AM. Proceeds support the Bernard Mcdonald/GeorgeGlee, Jr. and Joan Maynard Scholarship Funds.

Savor Bed-Stuy

October 8th – 15th, Savor Bed Stuy sponsored by Bridge Street Development Corporation & Bedford Stuyvesant Gateway Business Improvement District. Fantastic specials will be offered all during the week at our participating restaurants. Eat in or take out at some of our best restaurants. Look for the Alive! logo in the window of participating restaurants. Check out Savor Bed-Stuy for the discounts and locations.
