Huddle Up! T-Mobile helps East New York Community

This past Thursday, August 11, 2011, T-Mobile partnered with the non-profit Groundwork to develop a brand new after-school community center here in Central Brooklyn. Groundwork’s new center, called the “T-Mobile Huddle Up Zone” is located on the corner of Blake and Vermont Ave, just off of Pennsylvania Ave, in East New York.

The new facility will act as a customized afterschool space stocked with TV, furniture, books, and games. 150 T-Mobile employee volunteers swarmed the site to revitalize the building with a new color scheme and murals, building bookcases, benches, picnic tables, and constructing a new community garden and fixing up the basketball court. Groundwork, Inc. supports the development of powerful youth, powerful families, and powerful communities so that young people have access to a full range of opportunities to lead a rewarding and fulfilling life. The facility serves anywhere from 800 to 1,000 youth and is used primarily for college preparation courses.

Taking corporate responsibility to the next level, Huddle Up is T-Mobile’s national community outreach and employee volunteer program that  connects kids, primarily from single-parent families in high-need communities to positive people, places and programs. Now in its sixth year, T-Mobile Huddle Up has transformed more than 58 afterschool programs nationwide and is taking on 10 more “extreme makeovers” in 2011. Terry Hayes, T-Mobile vice president and general manager, New York and New Jersey, said “This [Brooklyn] is where our customers live —  they are the reason we are successful today. The very least we can do is give back to them today with a day of service to improve their community.”

For more information on Groundwork, contact Ali Knight or stop by the amazing facility at 692 Blake Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11207.  I am sure you all are familiar with T-Mobile, but go check out your local retail location at 1224 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, NY 11216.
