As Above So Below Cultural Store

“As above so below” is considered an extremely important ‘Hermetic maxim’ – one in a series of thought-provoking works in ancient history which formed the basis of astrology, alchemy, and metaphysics. A combination of Egyptian, Hellenistic, and Arabic teachings, the Hermetic texts attempt to explain the connection between the macrocosm and the microcosm, and the impacts they have on one another. Ultimately, it highlights the importance in the concept of unity and the interrelation of our physical world, spirituality, and our relationships with each other.

As Above So Below is also a store on Fulton Street in Bed-Stuy. It is an apt name for a shop which supplies a series of Caribbean and African cultural items and highlights the importance of finding oneself to understand the ‘bigger picture.’  The storefront itself is like a little market which houses a series of micro-shops within itself; selling everything from incense, herbs, clothing, drums, fabrics, music, books, oils, jewelry, and everything in-between! The owner, Ama Selassie, has been offering these cultural supplies to Bed-Stuy for 18 years now at this flagship location on Fulton Street. Ama explains that As Above So Below offers a unique slice of both African Muslim and Rasta cultures in one location, setting it apart from similar cultural stores. Personally, I find that it helps highlight the African-diaspora experience and its shared identity and history; regardless of religion, language, or national boundary. They also have an awesome selection of Tie Dye clothing!

As Above So Below is located at 1138 Fulton Street, Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, NY 11216. The shop is open 11:00AM – 10:00PM 7 days a week. You can even shop for some of their products online here!
