Brownsville “B-Ball Free For All”

It was a scorcher yesterday, but that didn’t stop hundreds of kids and a crew of WNBA stars from heading to Brownsville for a celebration of sports, community parks, and healthy lifestyles. Hosted by New Yorkers for Parks at the Brownsville Recreation Center over on Linden Blvd., the “B-Ball Free For All” event provided free basketball clinics and exercise programs for children and families. Ella Tabasky, Development Manager at NY4P, said the goal was “to highlight the vital role City parks and recreation centers play in keeping New Yorkers healthy.”

Kia Vaughn and Sidney Colson from the New York Liberty, along with former Liberty legend Kym Hampton and volunteers from the community helped boys and girls of all ages take part in basketball clinics, where they learned mad court skills and performed drills. On the agenda were passing, dribbling, free throws, and running drills. But it wasn’t all training, there were heaps of other games too – like human bumper-carts, hula-hooping, and football passing target-practice. Even the local police department got into the fun and joined in on an ad-hoc double-dutch jump roping session. On hand were lots of freebies and giveaways, as well as a meet-and-greet photo op with the WNBA players and their team mascot Maddie.

Community partners were on hand like NYC Department of Parks and WNBA staff, as well as the principal sponsor of the event L+M Development Partners. As well, McGraw Hill, Modell’s Sporting Goods, and our very own Super Foodtown were on deck to lend a helping hand for the community event.

If you have never heard of New Yorkers for Parks, it is a not-for-profit organization that champions quality parks for all New Yorkers in all neighborhoods. The Department of Parks & Recreation oversees more than 30 year-round recreation centers, which provide affordable recreation options and help promote healthy lifestyles. You can use their nifty map tool to find a park near you … I think I will be going to the pool today!!!
