Bewitching nightlife descends on Nostrand!

“We were just tired of having to leave Bed-Stuy to socialize,” says co-owners Daphnee Surpris and Emanuel Tropnasse of the new Vodou Lounge. They continued: “we are from Bed-Stuy and wanted to be able to have quality service, cocktails, and something sexy in the neighborhood.”

Well folks, Vodou Lounge is very sexy.

yes, I did say fireplace lounge.

Complete with in-house dj’s, world-class mixologists, a relatable menu, and some super hot design elements (did you say fireplace lounge?),  Vodou Lounge just redefined what it means to go out in Bed-Stuy. The drink and small plate menus reference the Hatian Vodou theme throughout, with drinks like the ginger-infused Initiation and the cucumber cilantro Spellbound, or the Nola Crawfish Roll and Fried Oysters.

Ms. Odum in her element!

Designed by New York Interior Designer Henry Mitchell, the lounge really elevates this bar as a quality space on Nostrand. Criss-crossing wood slats filter in the industrial street-lamp light from the outside delivering the ambiance, and the pink glow radiating from the bar and the one-of-a-kind chandelier define the center point: the cocktails. Created exclusively for Vodou Lounge, famous mixologist Darryl Robinson designed a set of 10 specialty cocktail items which will leave you charmed. Barkeep Shanel Odum is more than happy to use her 10 years of experience to mix you Haitian Barbancourt rum and muddled fresh fruit. And the Friday night I swung by, DJ Calico Jones was spinning 60’s retro tracks for a solid crowd.

Patrons Ms. Detrich Allen of Los Angeles and Mr. Lerzol Martin of Harlem were ecstatic about the new lounge: the food and drinks are nothing less than “fantastic.” Sipping on a Kahlua and Cream, the special Initiation cocktail, and happily munching on the fried oyster plate, Mr. Martin continued “it only took me 25 minutes to get here on the A train from Harlem. I will definitely be coming back for more!” Ms. Allen said she found out about Vodou Lounge from her 81 year old aunt who lives down the street from the lounge, who was also very happy about the new addition to the neighborhood. “My aunt brought me by here earlier in the day, and now I am back for the nightlife.”

Vodou Lounge is set to have its official Grand Opening on May 4th with its full-blown menu items and programmed weeknights. Co-owner Ms. Surpris says she wants the space to also act as a venue for up-and-coming artists and musicians from Bed-Stuy to express themselves and give them a space to present their work. Surrounded by gingham, bowties, and pocket-squares, I think they hit the mark as a classy neighborhood joint, too. “This is going to be a Bed-Stuy destination, but we are here for the neighborhood first,” Ms. Surpris, who also co-owns Ms. Dahlia’s Cafe, stated. “Bed-Stuy deserves it!”

Come on in!

Happy hour specials are from 4-7pm and include $3 draughts and $5 margaritas and wells. Open until 4am Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and 2am the rest of the week, we no longer need to hop on that Nostrand A train for our night-out. Located on the corner of Nostrand Avenue and Halsey Street, you can’t miss the warm glow and pumping tunes. And yes, Bed-Stuy deserves it!
