Marty Markowitz, Brooklyn Borough Pres, kicks off Shop Brooklyn

3 Cheers for Shopping Local: Marty Markowitz leads a buy local campaign on Fulton Street

Kicking off the 2009 Shop Brooklyn Campaign, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz headed over to our neck of the woods for the razzle and dazzle opening speech today, November 24th. If you haven’t heard, Shop Brooklyn is a borough-wide campaign promoting two things: buying local and the “Brooklyn Bonus”. We probably all know the awesome benefits of buying local: supporting our small businesses, energy efficiency, keeping money local, etc., but you probably don’t know about the benefits of the Brooklyn Bonus. Sure, Target and Best Buy offer some pretty gnarly deals on Black Friday and the rest of the holiday season, but the Brooklyn Bonus is doing the exact same thing – except it is for our local mom’s and pop’s instead!

Check out some of the deals in the Gateway and look in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood using the drop-down neighborhood tool. I know of a couple places that are actually tax-free this holiday season (on top of their discounts)!
